New SIRIUS® XHS Options and Features: Digital Counters and CAN-FD

Jaka Ogorevc
May 22, 2024

Introducing new options for SIRIUS® XHS high-speed data acquisition systems. 8-channel SUPERCOUNTER® inputs that support various modes such as event counting, waveform timing, encoder, tacho, and geartooth. And the second is an upgrade on the CAN input which now supports CAN-FD by default.
Digital Counters Input (SUPERCOUNTER®)
SIRIUS® XHS devices can now be configured with eight SUPERCOUNTER® inputs. The input connectors are installed on the device backplane.
SIRIUS® XHS counter inputs support all these modes:
Event counting
Waveform timing
Encoder
Tacho
Geartooth
Counter inputs feature standard LEMO 1B 7-pin female connectors, consistent with connectors used in other Dewesoft product lines (SIRIUS®, IOLITE®, KRYPTON®).
Each Counter channel comes with three standard inputs (A, B, Z) necessary for encoder applications. It also provides +12 V and +5 V for sensor supply, along with digital output for alarming and fast triggering.

The Counters on SIRIUS® XHS devices boast a timebase of 150 MHz, a maximum bandwidth of 15 MHz, and a 32-bit resolution. Dewesoft SUPERCOUNTER® features advanced input filtering to address glitching issues. Counter inputs are compatible with 3.3 V TTL/CMOS logic levels.
The counter channels can also be used as a digital output. Digital outputs utilize 5 V push-pull logic with a fast triggering option. The triggers out module enables digital outputs based on custom conditions. Either from the analog input channel or digital input channel. This trigger option operates in real-time on the hardware itself. Users have the flexibility to customize the shape of the output pulse in terms of delay and duration.
The total response time can go below 500 ns, proving beneficial in time-critical applications such as emergency shutdowns or alarms.

SUPERCOUNTER® on SIRIUS® XHS makes easy setup for applications like electric motor testing where in addition to the voltage and current inputs the users can connect the frequency output of the torque sensor and rotational speed sensor to the counter inputs to determine the mechanical power and perform the full analysis in the DewesoftX’s Power Analyzer and Motor Analysis software solution.
CAN-FD input
From now on all SIRIUS® XHS units will be compatible with CAN-FD bus systems. CAN-FD is available at full speed up to 8 Mbps for both reading and writing. Of course, CAN FD is completely backwards-compatible with standard CAN 2.0. CAN Output RT is now running up to 1 kHz sampling rate.
